A Pendant Born in the Sky

The AJ Royal was designed by Arne Jacobsen in 1957 for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen — a building that gave the city its first true high-rise, its 22 floors heavily inspired by the New York skyline. Originally called simply the AJ Pendant, it hung in a copper finish above the tables in the snack bar, in the first-floor lounge, and in the Panorama Lounge on the 21st floor.

The segmented spherical form is considered Jacobsen's first move toward the pure geometric shapes that would define his later work. Reintroduced in 2020 to mark the 60th anniversary of the hotel's opening, the AJ Royal is now available in White and Black — as sharp and considered as it was in 1957.

The Design

The AJ Royal emits soft, even downlight through a frosted acrylic diffuser, giving 100% glare-free illumination. The ridged rings at the top of the shade allow a gentle uplight to filter through, creating warmth and ambience in the space above. The result is a pendant that works equally well over a dining table, in an office, or in a showroom.
