Louis Poulsen AJ Oxford Table Lamp
Manufacturer: Louis Poulsen | Designer: Arne Jacobsen
Designed for St Catherine's College
The AJ Oxford Table Lamp was first designed by Arne Jacobsen as a table lamp for the dining hall at St Catherine's College, Oxford β a modernist building inaugurated in 1963 that Jacobsen conceived as a complete work, from the architecture to the furniture and fittings. Long rows of oak tables seating 350 people were lit by these lamps as centrepieces, with natural light from clerestory windows and the wall-mounted AJ Eklipta providing general illumination. The lamp remains in use at the college today.
The AJ Oxford's slim black stem merges seamlessly into its circular base β a graphic, monochrome form that sits as naturally on a desk or shelf as it did in Jacobsen's dining hall.
The Design
The three-layer mouth-blown opal glass shade emits soft, downward-directed light with a gentle transparency that illuminates the surface below without glare. The variant without the metal top shade allows the opal glass to glow fully, forming a luminous halo around the fixture.
Available in two heights β the smaller version is ideal for compact spaces, shelves, and windowsills; the taller version suits desks and bedside tables. Both heights are available with or without the metal top shade.
Please note: the brass union nut and finger screw are untreated and will develop a natural patina over time.
- Light source: E14, max 20W (not included)
- Shade: three-layer mouth-blown white opal glass
- Stem and top shade: steel, black wet painted
- Brass fittings: untreated, will patinate
- Cable: 2.2m black textile cord with plug
- Switch: on/off on socket house with brass union nut
