A Lighting Series Born in a Copenhagen Hotel

Hans J. Wegner designed the Opala Lighting Series in 1973 for Hotel Scandinavia in Copenhagen — a commission that gave him room to explore beyond furniture and into light. The series is immediately recognisable: slightly tilted shades, straight lines, a quietly futuristic quality that has aged without dating. Wegner approached the design with characteristic ingenuity: a single lampshade size fits every variation in the series, enabling more consistent production and better control of materials — principles that continue to guide Carl Hansen & Søn today.

The HJW38 Opala Pendant Light Mini is the hanging version of the series. The circular opal acrylic shade with a painted aluminium top casts a warm, focused light downward while the semi-transparent surface diffuses a soft ambient glow into the surrounding space. Well suited to dining tables, kitchen islands, and reading nooks.
