A Lighting Series Born in a Copenhagen Hotel

Hans J. Wegner designed the Opala Lighting Series in 1973 for Hotel Scandinavia in Copenhagen — a commission that gave him room to explore beyond furniture and into light. The series is immediately recognisable: slightly tilted shades, straight lines, a quietly futuristic quality that has aged without dating. Wegner approached the design with characteristic ingenuity: a single lampshade size fits every variation in the series, enabling more consistent production and better control of materials — principles that continue to guide Carl Hansen & Søn today.

The HJW03 Opala Floor Lamp Midi is the standing version of the series. An asymmetric opal acrylic shade with a painted aluminium top directs a focused, pleasant light where it is needed, while the semi-transparent surface softly fills the surrounding space with a warm ambient glow. An in-line switch keeps operation simple. Well suited to reading corners, living rooms, and beside a desk or sofa.
