Carl Hansen EK61 Opal Pendant Light
Manufacturer: Carl Hansen & SΓΈn | Designer: Esben Klint, 1961
A Design Sixty Years in the Making
The EK61 was conceived in 1961 and never made. Esben Klint β son of the great Danish designer Kaare Klint β designed this pendant in pleated plastic, a material too complex to produce at the time. The design went into the family archives and stayed there until Carl Hansen & SΓΈn retrieved it, reinterpreted it in mouth-blown opal glass and hand-turned oak, and put it into production for the first time.
The result is a pendant that feels both entirely of its moment and quietly historical. The pleated, elliptical glass form diffuses light softly and evenly. The oak details β turned and honed by hand β reference traditional Chinese lantern construction without quoting it directly. It is a considered object that rewards close attention. Available in three sizes: 160mm for a bedside or intimate setting, 240mm as a solo dining pendant, 340mm for larger spaces or grouped in clusters.
