Artek Armchair 41 Paimio Lounge Chair

Manufacturer: Artek | Designer: Alvar Aalto, 1932

Armchair 41 — known as the Paimio — was designed by Aalto for the reading room of the Paimio Sanatorium in Finland, where patients spent long hours in recovery. The brief demanded a chair that would ease breathing: the seat shell tilts the body into a position that opens the chest, while the form-bent birch lamella frame provides a degree of flex that a rigid structure cannot. The seat shell is fixed to the frame at only four points, giving it a suspended quality — it appears to float within the frame rather than sit upon it. The armrests are formed from a single piece of birch split in half before assembly, so that as the wood moves over time, the chair remains perfectly balanced. Considered one of Aalto's masterpieces, and one of the defining objects of twentieth-century furniture design.

  • Dimensions: Width: 60 cm × Depth: 80 cm × Height: 64 cm | Seat height: 33 cm
  • Frame: Form-bent solid birch lamella
  • Seat shell: Form-pressed birch plywood
