Vitra Eames Plywood Group LCM Chair

Manufacturer: Vitra | Designer: Charles & Ray Eames, 1945/46

Plywood Group β€” LCM Lounge Chair Metal

The LCM (Lounge Chair Metal) is the metal-base variant of the Plywood Group β€” organic moulded plywood shells paired with a chromed or powder-coated tubular steel base, creating a tension between warm wood and cool metal that gives the chair its distinctive character. Compact in proportion, it is especially well suited to smaller lounges and lobbies, and works equally well with or without upholstery.

Charles and Ray Eames spent many years experimenting with techniques for producing three-dimensionally moulded plywood seat shells that conformed to the contours of the human body. The result was the Plywood Group β€” a family of chairs that have matured into classics while retaining an appearance that still looks contemporary today. The seat and backrest connect to the frame via shock mounts β€” bonded rubber and metal connectors that allow a slight, natural flex.

Specifications

  • Dimensions β€” W56 Γ— D63.5 Γ— H65cm (seat height 31.5cm)
  • Colours β€” black ash, natural ash, black pigmented walnut
  • Back & seat β€” moulded plywood with face veneer in ash or walnut
  • Base β€” tubular steel, chrome-plated or powder-coated; seat and backrest attached via shock mounts (bonded rubber and metal connectors)
  • Glides β€” hard glides for carpet or felt glides for hard floors
