Vitra Eames Plastic Armchair RE DAW
Manufacturer: Vitra | Designer: Charles & Ray Eames, 1950
DAW — Dining Height Armchair, Wood Base
The Eames Plastic Armchair RE DAW is the armchair counterpart to the DSW — the same organically shaped recycled polypropylene shell, now with arms, on a wooden dowel base in maple or ash. First presented at the Museum of Modern Art's Low-Cost Furniture Design competition in 1950, the Eames armchair shell was among the first industrially manufactured plastic chairs.
The DAW (Dining Height Armchair Wood Base) pairs the wider armchair shell with a wooden dowel base available in Golden Maple, Dark Maple, Black Maple, and Honey-Toned Ash, with steel rod cross struts in Basic Dark. The shell is produced from recycled post-consumer plastic sourced from household packaging collected through Germany's Yellow Bag (Gelber Sack) scheme — significantly reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions versus virgin plastic. At end of life, the shells are 100% recyclable. Due to the nature of the recycled material, shell colours carry very subtle specks of pigment.
Origin of wood: ash (Fraxinus excelsior) and maple (Acer platanoides) from Western Europe and/or Poland.
