When Metal Was Scarce
The Chaise Tout Bois is the only chair by Jean Prouvé made entirely from wood. Its design is closely related to the Standard chair, but during the Second World War the scarcity of metal led Prouvé to substitute wood throughout — including the base. The construction does not require a single screw. The warm look and feel of wood contrasts appealingly with the practical structural logic that is typical of Prouvé's functional approach.
This Vitra edition corresponds to one of Prouvé's design variants from 1941. The height and seat geometry are the same as those of the Standard chair and meet current norms and requirements. Available in natural oak or dark-stained oak, both with a protective lacquer finish.
