Vitra Butterfly Stool

Manufacturer: Vitra | Designer: Sori Yanagi, 1954

A Japanese Modernist Icon

The Butterfly Stool is one of the most recognisable pieces of twentieth-century Japanese design. Sori Yanagi conceived it in 1954, drawing on the plywood moulding techniques pioneered by Charles and Ray Eames to create a form that is distinctly his own. Two identical curved shells of moulded plywood are joined at the centre by a brass rod and footrest, their symmetrical sweep evoking the open wings of a butterfly. The result is a stool that works as a seat, a side table, or simply as an object in a room.

Specifications

  • Dimensions — W42 × D31 × H39cm
  • Material — moulded plywood with brass fittings
  • Finishes — Maple (natural finish, sourced from Germany/France); Santos Palisander (sourced from Bolivia)

Part of the Low Stools collection.
