Vitra Amoebe Lounge Chair
Manufacturer: Vitra | Designer: Verner Panton, 1970
Born from Visiona II
The Amoebe was born from one of the most radical interiors of the twentieth century. Created in 1970 for Verner Panton's legendary Visiona II installation — a psychedelic, immersive environment staged aboard an exhibition ship at the Cologne Furniture Fair — it was conceived as a low-slung lounge sculpture that dissolved the boundary between furniture and space.
The seat and backrest form a single sculptural unity, its organic silhouette — as the name suggests — drawn from the form of single-celled organisms. Close to the floor and generously padded throughout, it invites a particular kind of ease: unhurried, enveloping, entirely its own.
Handcrafted and available in a wide range of Vitra fabrics and colours. The covers are removable and can be replaced or refitted by trained professionals.
For more information on available fabrics and colours, visit the Vitra Colour & Material Library.
Specifications
- Dimensions — W65 × D86 × H87cm (seat height 35cm)
- Backrest — laminated frame
- Upholstery — polyurethane foam
Also available as the Vitra Amoebe Highback, the Vitra Cone Chair, the Vitra Heart Cone Chair and the Vitra Visiona Stool. Part of the Vitra Verner Panton, Vitra Lounge Chairs and Lounge Chairs collections.
