Designed by Gudmundur Ludvik in 2023, the GL101 Timbur Outdoor Bench is his debut design for Carl Hansen & Søn — and a quietly assured one. Ludvik trained as a carpenter and cabinetmaker in Iceland, and that background is evident in every detail: the joinery is the design. He has stripped the bench back to its very essence, letting the natural structure of the untreated teak do the work. The name Timbur means ‘timber’ in Icelandic — a direct nod to the material at the heart of the piece.
The bench has generous proportions: a gently sloping backrest for comfort, and wide armrests that double as side tables — large enough to rest a mug or a small plate. Modular and flat-packed, it is designed for versatile outdoor settings and built to weather naturally over time, the teak developing a silver-grey patina with exposure to the elements.
