The FH429 Signature Chair was the last piece of furniture Frits Henningsen designed and produced — a fitting final statement from one of Denmark’s greatest furniture designers. Henningsen was a cabinetmaker who held his craft to the highest standards, always manufacturing his own designs and often beginning with a small model. For this chair, he worked in modelling clay and toothpicks before the frame was built in his Copenhagen workshop, where it underwent months of testing and adjustment before he was satisfied.
Fewer than 20 pieces were produced after the chair was completed in 1954. Carl Hansen & Søn reintroduced the design in 2015. The simplicity of Henningsen’s work increased over the years, and the Signature Chair represents his most pared-down design — soft, inviting shapes and floating armrests creating a quiet, organic form that rewards stillness.
