Carl Hansen FH38 Windsor Chair
Manufacturer: Carl Hansen & Søn | Designer: Frits Henningsen, 1938
A Chair That Has Earned Its Place
The FH38 Windsor Chair was designed by Danish architect and cabinetmaker Frits Henningsen in 1938 and remained in continuous production at Carl Hansen & Søn until 2003. Now reissued, it arrives with a leather seat cushion for added comfort — the only concession to modernity in a design that has needed nothing else.
The chair sits between a dining chair and a lounge chair in character: high-backed and upright, but with a generosity of proportion that invites longer stays. The open spindle frame, gently curved back, seat, and armrests give it a lightness that its presence in a room belies. Every transition and organic surface on the armrests is sanded by hand using a feel test — meaning no two chairs are identical, and each one is a direct expression of the craftsman who made it.
Craftsmanship & Finish
