Carl Hansen CH468 Oculus Chair

Manufacturer: Carl Hansen & Søn | Designer: Hans J. Wegner, 1960

Designed in 1960, Produced Half a Century Later

The CH468 has an unusual history. Hans J. Wegner designed it in 1960, and a full-size prototype was made at the time — but the chair never went into production. It was only when Carl Hansen & Søn visited Wegner’s design studio and discovered photographs and a small clay model of the chair that the project was revived. When the original technical drawings were retrieved and the 1960 prototype studied, production finally began in 2010 — fifty years after the design was first conceived.

The name comes from the Latin word for eye: oculus. It refers to the eye-shaped stitching in the chair’s back upholstery, a detail that gives the chair its identity. The back itself is one of the largest form-pressed wood veneer pieces in modern furniture, which makes the construction exceptionally stable. It is shaped to allow the shoulder blades to fall back naturally into the chair, providing support for the neck, back and shoulders across a range of sitting positions — not just one.

Craftsmanship & Finish

The stainless steel frame has sloping legs that create a considered counterbalance to the generous upholstered body. The seat cushion is a mixture of down and foam — comfortable enough to hold its shape over time. The interior frame is handmade entirely in solid wood.

  • Dimensions — W94 × D94 × H105cm (seat height 40cm)
  • Frame — Stainless steel
  • Seat & back — Foam and down, fully upholstered in fabric or leather

Pairs with the CH446 footrest and the CH415 coffee table. Part of the Carl Hansen lounge chairs collection.
