A Rocking Chair from a Master of the Form

Hans J. Wegner designed around 500 chairs in his lifetime and was fascinated by the rocking chair throughout his career. The CH45 was designed in 1965 as part of a larger series of 13 pieces for Carl Hansen & Søn — a cohesive family of furniture sharing the same Shaker-influenced identity: honest construction, ladder-back detailing, and hand-woven paper cord seats. The series includes the CH44 Lounge Chair and the CH53 stool.

The CH45 was only manufactured for a short period after its original release before being discontinued. It has since been reintroduced, bringing the rocking chair back into the series where it belongs. The reclined ladder-back backrest and envelope-woven paper cord seat give the chair a dynamic, perfectly proportioned form — comfortable for sitting, rocking, and rising with equal ease.
