Carl Hansen CH445 Wing Chair

Manufacturer: Carl Hansen & Søn | Designer: Hans J. Wegner, 1960

A Dramatic Silhouette, Precisely Engineered

The CH445 Wing Chair was designed by Hans J. Wegner in 1960, when only a small number of examples were produced. It remained out of production for decades before Carl Hansen & Søn relaunched it in 2006 — a chair that had waited long enough to be properly appreciated.

The silhouette is immediately striking: a high, fully upholstered back that rises above the shoulders and wraps slightly forward, giving the chair its name. Beneath the upholstery is a solid beech frame, chosen for strength and durability. The foam density and shaping are carefully calibrated to support the back, shoulders, neck and head across different sitting positions — not just one ideal posture, but a range of them.

Craftsmanship & Finish

The stainless steel frame is slender and round. The front legs tilt slightly forward; the rear legs extend far back, ensuring the chair remains stable even in a reclined position. Four small cone-shaped steel elements connect the upper chair to the frame, and each leg carries a steel shoe to prevent sliding. The engineering is as considered as the form.

  • Dimensions — W90 × D90 × H103cm (seat height 39cm)
  • Frame — Stainless steel
  • Seat & back — Solid beech, foam, fully upholstered in fabric or leather

Pairs with the CH446 footrest and the CH415 coffee table. Part of the Carl Hansen lounge chairs collection.
