Shaker Simplicity in a Lounge Chair
The CH44 was designed by Hans J. Wegner in 1965, shaped by the same Shaker principles that informed the CH36 and CH46 and CH47 chairs — a belief that honest construction and simplified form are enough. The result is a lounge chair that is immediately legible: nothing added that doesn’t need to be there, nothing removed that does.
The joints between the front legs and armrests are characteristic Wegner — defined and precise, with the armrests sloping upwards towards the rear legs, becoming more slender as they rise to strengthen the vertical joint elegantly. The rear legs carry grooves at the top from which a back cushion can be hung. The seat is hand-woven in paper cord, the same material used across the CH36 and CH37 dining chairs — durable, tactile, and long-lasting.
