A Paper Cord Dining Chair Shaped by Shaker Principles

The CH36 was designed by Hans J. Wegner in 1962, shaped in part by his admiration for American Shaker furniture — its honesty of construction, its refusal of ornament, its insistence that form follow function. The result is a chair that is simple without being plain: every dimension considered, every angle set to support the body rather than merely to look right.

The legs taper towards the floor, and the rear legs taper upwards too, giving the chair a lightness that belies its solidity. The backrest curves more at the top than the bottom, following the natural shape of the spine. The seat and frame are hand-woven in paper cord — 120 metres of it per chair — a material that is both durable and tactile, with a lifespan of up to 50 years before replacement is needed.
