The Perfect Chair, Revisited
The CH30 dining chair was presented by Hans J. Wegner in 1954 as part of his lifelong pursuit of the perfect chair. It is a design of quiet sophistication: the curved, oval backrest pitches back in line with the rear legs for natural lumbar support, and is finished with distinctive cruciform cover caps — a detail that is both structural and characterful. The wide, form-pressed padded seat adds generous comfort, and the compact footprint means the chair tucks neatly under a table when not in use.
The CH30 was out of production for a number of years before being recreated in close collaboration with Wegner’s Design Studio, working directly from his original drawings. Two centimetres were added to the height to meet modern ergonomic standards — the only concession to the contemporary. Everything else is as Wegner intended.
Craftsmanship & Finish
The frame is constructed in solid oak or walnut with a veneered back, and the seat is foam-padded and upholstered in your choice of Carl Hansen fabric or leather. The cruciform cover caps on the backrest always match the frame wood — note that in Oak Black Lacquer, the oak grain remains visible and the cap is finished in black only.
