Carl Hansen CH29P Sawbuck Dining Chair
Manufacturer: Carl Hansen & Søn | Designer: Hans J. Wegner, 1952
The Sawbuck Chair
The CH29P Sawbuck Chair was designed by Hans J. Wegner in 1952, taking its name from the sawbucks and sawhorses used by carpenters and woodcutters. Wegner translated that utilitarian form into something altogether more refined: a dining chair with a seat that widens noticeably towards the front and a deeply curved backrest that adapts naturally to different sitting positions. The result is a chair that looks light and almost casual, but is quietly engineered for comfort.
The CH29P was taken out of production in the 1970s and relaunched two decades later at the suggestion of Wegner’s family. It returned to immediate success — a testament to how well the design had aged. Its organic silhouette and comfort-first construction feel as considered today as they did at its debut. The chair shares a close family resemblance with Wegner’s CH28 Easy Chair, the two designs united by the same sculptural approach to the back.
