Carl Hansen CH24 Wishbone Dining Chair Black Paper Cord
Manufacturer: Carl Hansen & Søn | Designer: Hans J. Wegner, 1949
The Chair That Defined Danish Design
The very first model Hans J. Wegner designed exclusively for Carl Hansen & Søn, the CH24 Wishbone Chair has been in continuous production since 1950 — a rare distinction that speaks to the enduring rightness of its form. The gently rounded top rail flows into the characteristic Y-shaped back in a single steam-bent piece, combining backrest and armrest into one continuous curve that is as structurally considered as it is beautiful. Light enough to move around a table without thought, and comfortable enough to stay in long after the meal is finished.
This version is finished with black paper cord — a striking alternative to the natural cord that gives the Wishbone a sharper, more graphic quality. It pairs particularly well with darker wood finishes such as oak smoked oil, oak black lacquer, or walnut, though it reads equally well against lighter woods for a bold contrast.
The Craft Behind Each Chair
More than 100 steps are required to produce a single Wishbone Chair, the majority carried out by hand. The hand-woven paper cord seat alone takes a skilled craftsman approximately one hour to complete, using around 120 metres of cord per chair — the result is a seat that is exceptionally durable, stable underhand, and visually striking from every angle.
