Simplicity as a Design Discipline

The CH23 Dining Chair was one of the first chairs Hans J. Wegner designed exclusively for Carl Hansen & Søn in 1950 — pieces that set new standards for modern furniture design through their artistic expression and ergonomic form. Reintroduced in 2017, it remains true to Wegner’s original hand-drawn sketches, with every aesthetic and structural detail intact.

Although the CH23 may appear uncomplicated at first glance, it is full of refined detail: the elegant cruciform cover caps in the backrest, a double-woven paper cord seat, and arched rear legs that ensure optimal stability. Wegner was a master at making complex designs appear simple — and the CH23 is among his finest demonstrations of that discipline.

The chair has no armrests, making it practical around the table even in smaller rooms. Its organic form and considered proportions make it as comfortable as it is considered.

Craftsmanship & Finish

Available in solid oak and walnut with a natural paper cord seat. The oak/walnut combination pairs an oak frame and cover caps with a walnut backrest. Oak has a clearly visible wood structure when painted.
