Half a Century in the Archive
Wegner designed the CH20 Elbow Chair in 1956, crafted two prototypes, and set it aside. The production demands were too great for the time. It remained in his archives for nearly fifty years until Carl Hansen & Søn brought it into production in 2005 — where it promptly won the ICFF Editors’ Award in New York in the same year.
The defining feature is the steam-bent backrest, formed from a single piece of solid wood. It curves to support both the elbows and the lower back, allowing a range of sitting positions that a conventional chair back cannot offer. Beneath the seat, a rail construction in form-pressed veneer provides stability without the need for additional rungs between the legs — keeping the silhouette light and the structure honest.
The CH20 is stackable, and its low back and straight seat make it equally at home at a dining table or a desk.
