Three Seats, One Defining Detail
The CH163 is the three-seater version of Wegner’s CH162 series, designed in 1965 and rediscovered in his archives by Carl Hansen & Søn in 2013. It is a sofa with a geometric silhouette — raised sides, clean lines, a firmly upholstered solid wood frame — and a construction that is more considered than it first appears.
The Cover Cap
The detail that defines the series is the enlarged wooden cover cap set into each armrest. It conceals the screw that fixes the upholstery to the frame, but Wegner made it larger than the job required, set it slightly back from the front edge of the leg, and oriented its grain transversally to the grain of the leg itself. A functional necessity turned into the sofa’s most recognisable feature.
The cushions use down wrapped around a foam core — a construction that brings softness to a form that could otherwise read as austere. Available in Oak Soap, Oak Oil, Oak White Oil, or Walnut Oil, with a wide selection of Carl Hansen fabrics and leathers.
