Vitra HAL RE Barstool

Manufacturer: Vitra | Designer: Jasper Morrison, 2014

The HAL Shell, Elevated

HAL is Jasper Morrison's interpretation of a shell chair in the tradition of the Plastic Chair by Charles and Ray Eames β€” a design whose variety of bases enables versatile use, from dining tables to meeting rooms, from bars to auditoriums. The HAL RE Barstool takes this to counter and bar height, with a swivel-mounted recycled plastic shell and gas spring-assisted height adjustment suited to surfaces from 90 to 110cm tall.

The recycling material stems from Germany's 'Yellow Bag' (Gelber Sack) household waste collection, which primarily consists of used packaging. Using this recycled material instead of conventional plastic generates 54% fewer climate-damaging emissions, with a significant reduction in energy consumption. Due to the composition of the recycled material, the colours are interspersed with tiny specks of pigment β€” a characteristic of the material. The HAL RE seat shell can also be 100% recycled at the end of its life.

Specifications

  • Dimensions β€” W47 Γ— D49.5 Γ— H102–111.5cm (seat height 65.5/75cm)
  • Seat shell β€” Dyed-through recycled polypropylene with swivel mechanism
  • Base β€” Height-adjustable tubular steel pedestal with gas spring, powder-coated in basic dark; column sleeve and footrest in chrome-plated tubular steel with anti-skid surface
