Carl Hansen CH25 Easy Chair Natural Paper Cord
Manufacturer: Carl Hansen & Søn | Designer: Hans J. Wegner, 1950
A Chair You’ll Return To
The CH25 sits low and wide, drawing you into a posture that is relaxed without being recumbent. The hand-woven paper cord — warm, slightly textured, and taut beneath you — gives the seat a quiet resilience that foam simply cannot replicate. It holds its shape, breathes with the seasons, and improves with age. In a living room, it anchors a corner without dominating it. In a sunroom or open kitchen, it brings an unhurried Scandinavian calm that feels considered rather than decorated.
This is not a chair that shouts. It is a chair that stays.
The Craft Behind It
When Hans J. Wegner introduced the CH25 in 1950, his choice of paper cord as the seat and backrest material was unconventional — a wartime replacement for seagrass that no one had thought to use in furniture before. Wegner saw its potential immediately: non-stretching, exceptionally durable, and visually striking from every angle.
Each seat and backrest is woven entirely by hand by a single craftsman, using a technique that resembles traditional weaving and is visible on both sides of the backrest. It takes approximately 10 hours and 400 metres of cord to complete one chair. The natural, unbleached cord used here has a warmth and texture that the dyed alternatives cannot match — and it only improves as it settles into use.
