Vitra Wooden Doll Mother Fish & Child
Manufacturer: Vitra | Designer: Alexander Girard, 1952
Folk Art for the Home
Like the Wooden Dolls, the Mother Fish & Child began as a personal object — made by Alexander Girard for his own home in Santa Fe, inspired by the folk art traditions of South America, Asia and Eastern Europe that shaped much of his work. The two figures are hand-carved in solid fir and hand-painted, with the same directness and warmth that runs through Girard's broader practice as one of the leading figures of postwar American design.
Based on originals from the Girard estate in the Vitra Design Museum collection, the set comes in a high-quality wooden gift box with a printed label and brochure.
