Folk Art for the Home

The Dog is one of the Wooden Dolls that Alexander Girard made for his own home in Santa Fe — hand-carved and painted, drawn from the folk art of South America, Asia and Eastern Europe that he spent a lifetime collecting. Like the rest of the series, it was never intended for production; it began as a personal object, part decorative figure, part toy. Girard was one of the defining figures of postwar American design, best known for his textile work, and the Dolls reflect the same eye for colour and pattern applied at a smaller, more intimate scale.

Based on an original from the Girard estate in the Vitra Design Museum collection, the Dog Small comes in a high-quality wooden gift box with a printed label and brochure.
