Vitra Wooden Doll
Manufacturer: Vitra | Designer: Alexander Girard, 1952
Folk Art for the Home
Alexander Girard made the Wooden Dolls for his own home in Santa Fe — carving and painting them himself, drawing on the folk art of South America, Asia and Eastern Europe that he spent a lifetime collecting. They were never intended for production. Alongside Charles and Ray Eames and George Nelson, Girard was one of the defining figures of postwar American design, best known for his textile work, but the Dolls show a different side: personal, playful, and rooted in a deep affection for handmade objects.
The versions produced by Vitra are based on originals from the Girard estate, now held in the Vitra Design Museum collection. Each is hand-painted in solid fir and comes in a high-quality wooden gift box with a printed label and brochure.
