Vitra Rayonnage Mural Bookcase
Manufacturer: Vitra | Designer: Jean Prouvé, 1936
A Wall Shelf with the Sculptural Quality of an Object
Wall-mounted bookcases were a common feature of interiors during the first half of the twentieth century, and Jean Prouvé designed several variations. The Rayonnage Mural was originally conceived in 1936 for the École Nationale Professionnelle in Metz. Its two vertical wall brackets are formed from bent sheet steel — their streamlined, rudder-like profile a recurring motif in Prouvé’s work. Precise horizontal slits in the brackets receive the solid oak shelves, which slot in without fixings. The contrast between powder-coated steel and natural oiled oak gives the piece a practical rigour alongside genuine sculptural presence.
