Vitra Landi Chair

Manufacturer: Vitra | Designer: Hans Coray, 1938

Hans Coray designed the Landi Chair for the 1939 Swiss National Exhibition, and in doing so established what would become a defining typology in twentieth-century design: a three-dimensionally moulded seat shell on a separate base. The structure is straightforward and entirely resolved β€” two U-shaped aluminium profiles connected by welded crossbeams form a self-supporting frame that serves simultaneously as legs and low armrests. The pressed aluminium seat shell, with its 91 punched holes, sits on top: the perforations reduce weight, add flexibility, and give the Landi its instantly recognisable appearance.

Vitra’s re-edition stays true to the original proportions while making full use of current technical possibilities. The matte anodised aluminium surface is durable and weather-resistant, making the Landi suitable for unrestricted outdoor use. It stacks up to six units high, as in the original design, though the anodised surface may show signs of wear if chairs are stacked regularly.

  • Dimensions β€” W51.5 Γ— D65 Γ— H79.5cm (seat height 47.5cm)
  • Seat shell β€” Pressed aluminium with 91 punched holes, matte anodised finish
  • Base β€” Bent aluminium profiles with welded aluminium cross braces, matte anodised finish
  • Glides β€” Light grey injection-moulded TPE
  • Stacking β€” Up to 6 units high
  • Outdoor use β€” Suitable for unrestricted outdoor use

Pairs well with the Vitra Round Bistro Table and the Vitra Rectangular Bistro Table.

Part of the Vitra Outdoor Furniture collection.
