Vitra Eames Elephant Plywood
Manufacturer: Vitra | Designer: Charles & Ray Eames, 1945
Moulded Plywood, as Intended
Charles and Ray Eames designed a toy elephant in plywood in 1945 — a piece that never went into production. One prototype was shown at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and still survives in the Eames family archives today. After issuing a first limited edition, Vitra commenced serial production of the Eames Elephant in plywood, realising the design in the material the Eameses had always intended.
Available in two finishes — a light chestnut and a darker walnut — both moulded plywood with a face veneer and lacquer finish. The natural grain of the wood gives each piece its own quiet character, and the form itself remains as warm and considered as it was eighty years ago.
Specifications
- Dimensions — L78.5 × W35 × H41.5cm
- Materials — moulded plywood with face veneer in chestnut or walnut, lacquer finish
- Finishes — Chestnut Natural, Walnut Natural
- Wood origin — chestnut (Castanea sativa) from Slovenia; walnut (Juglans nigra) from Austria
Also available as the Eames Elephant RE and Eames Elephant Small RE in recycled plastic. Part of the Vitra Eames Accessories collection.
