Vitra Asterisk Wall Clock
Manufacturer: Vitra | Designer: George Nelson, 1949–1960
Wall Sculpture as Timepiece
The Asterisk Clock is one of the original Nelson clock designs launched in 1949 for Herman Miller — part of a collection built on the idea that people read the time by the position of the hands, not by numerals. Where the Ball Clock uses wooden spheres, the Asterisk uses slender metal spokes radiating from a central hub, giving it a lighter, more graphic quality. It reads as much as a wall sculpture as a timepiece.
Vitra has reissued the Nelson Clocks since 1999 as part of the Vitra Design Museum Collection, produced true to the original. The Asterisk is available in Black and Brass.
