A Canopy of Upholstery
Where the standard Amoebe dissolves into the room, the Highback encloses it. The extended backrest curves up and over the sitter’s head to form a niche-like canopy — a private shelter within the interior, as much architecture as furniture. It is the same organic silhouette, drawn from the form of single-celled organisms, but taken to its most immersive conclusion.
Born from Verner Panton’s legendary Visiona II installation at the 1970 Cologne Furniture Fair — a psychedelic, immersive environment staged aboard an exhibition ship — the Amoebe was conceived as a low-slung lounge sculpture that dissolved the boundary between furniture and space. The Highback pushes that idea furthest of all.
Handcrafted and available in a wide range of Vitra fabrics and colours. The covers are removable and can be replaced or refitted by trained professionals.
