Vitra Akari 50EN Suspension Light
Manufacturer: Vitra | Designer: Isamu Noguchi, 1951
The Akari 50EN is a suspension light with a warm, diffused quality of light and the quiet sculptural presence characteristic of the Akari series. Its washi paper shade is considered in proportion and effortless in effect β a versatile pendant that works equally well above a dining table or in a more intimate setting. Designed by Isamu Noguchi in 1951.
Each Akari luminaire is meticulously handcrafted at the Ozeki workshop, a traditional family-run company based in Gifu, Japan. Bamboo rods are stretched across Noguchiβs original wooden forms to create the framework, before strips of washi paper β derived from the bark of the mulberry tree β are glued to the bamboo ribbing. Once dry, the wooden form is removed and the shade folded into its final shape. Every piece carries a stylised sun-and-moon logo as a guarantee of authenticity.
