Vitra Abat-Jour Conique
Manufacturer: Vitra | Designer: Jean Prouvé, 1947
The Original Shade for the Potence
During the 1940s, Jean Prouvé designed the Potence wall lamp for his own home in Nancy — a simple light bulb affixed to a long, pivoting metal bar supported by a steel wire. In 1947 he developed the Abat-Jour Conique to match: a cone-shaped shade that completes the Potence in its different versions and sizes. Historical photographs of Prouvé’s house show him experimenting with various shade designs, but this conical form was the first and remains the most considered.
The shade fits simply over the bulb and can be removed when needed. The fabric cover is made of brushed cotton in white with a plastic backing; the frame is powder-coated steel wire. Sold separately from the Potence lamp.
