Poul Henningsen developed his three-shade system in 1925–1926, first realised in cooperation with Louis Poulsen for the Paris Exhibition. The system is built on the logarithmic spiral: every shade angle is calculated to redirect and soften the output of the bulb, eliminating glare and directing the majority of light downward. The PH 6½-6 is the largest pendant in the PH family — a fixture designed for generous ceiling heights and large interior volumes. A trumpet-shaped top shade directs light upward to illuminate the area above the fixture; three further spun aluminium shades on rolled aluminium coloured struts direct the majority of light downward. A blue spun aluminium anti-glare disc at the base and a base reflector protect against glare from all angles. The strongest light falls directly beneath the fixture.

The PH 6½-6 is fitted with an integrated LED light source, dimmable via Bluetooth using the Casambi app on a tablet or smartphone. The LED driver is housed in the canopy; an external driver box is also available, with a maximum distance of 20m between driver box and fixture.
