Poul Henningsen developed his three-shade system in 1926, enabling a level of lighting quality that could be precisely calibrated for any space or need. The model numbers in the PH family refer to shade sizes: in the ‘whole’ sized fixtures — such as the 2/2, 3/3, and 5/5 — the top shade and lower shades correspond in the proportions of 3:2:1, producing a rounder, more compact silhouette and a particularly glare-free quality of light. The PH 5/5, with its approximately 500mm top shade, is designed to hang high in a room, integrating quality downward light with a warm ambient glow. This distinguishes it from the ‘hybrid’ sizes — such as the PH 3/2 — which are designed to hang low and provide focused light above a table.

The PH 5/5 is available in two variations. In soft touch black painted aluminium with white inner sides, the shades reflect a fine, primarily downward-directed light. In the second variation, a black metal top shade is paired with translucent mouth-blown three-layer white opal glass middle and lower shades, creating a warm glow around the pendant as well as downward light. A frosted glass diffuser is included with both versions and can be inserted at the base for an even softer light distribution. Height of the light source is adjustable by approximately 65mm depending on the bulb used.
