Poul Henningsen developed his three-shade system in 1925–1926, first realised in cooperation with Louis Poulsen for the Paris Exhibition. The system is built on the logarithmic spiral: every shade angle is calculated to redirect and soften the output of the bulb, eliminating glare entirely and directing the majority of light downward. The PH 4/3 Metal Pendant was launched in 1966 as a simplification of a design Henningsen had first produced in 1929 — a light that won him the highest distinction at the World Exhibition in Barcelona. Metal pendants were produced in a range of sizes and colours over the years; the white-painted underside of each shade ensures diffuse, comfortable light distribution.

Three spun aluminium shades, powder coated white, are arranged in the 4:3 proportion of the classic three-shade system, with the centre of the light source positioned at the focal point of the spiral. An anti-glare disc at the base completes the fixture. The result is soft, uniform downlight with no visible glare from any angle.
