Louis Poulsen PH 3/3 Aged Brass Opal Pendant Light
Manufacturer: Louis Poulsen | Designer: Poul Henningsen
A Whole Lamp in Aged Brass
Poul Henningsen spent his career solving a single problem: how to produce light that is genuinely comfortable to live with. The answer, developed in 1926, was a three-shade system in which every surface angle is calculated to redirect and soften the output of the bulb β eliminating glare entirely while preserving warmth. The numbering in each PH design refers directly to the shade sizes; the PH 3/3 takes its name from its 300mm top shade, with the middle and lower shades scaled in a 3:2:1 ratio.
Henningsen described this configuration as a βwholeβ sized lamp β compact in form, but engineered to perform at height. It is designed to be hung high in a space, where it integrates quietly into the room while casting a warm, diffused light downward.
The middle and lower shades are mouth-blown in three-layered opal white glass β glossy on the exterior, sandblasted matte within β producing a soft, even light distribution with no visible hot spots. The aged brass top shade has a white-painted inner surface that directs a delicate, mainly downward light. A frosted glass bottom diffuser is included, further softening the output at the base of the fitting. The aged brass finish carries fine hairlines and is lacquered to preserve its character over time.
