Louis Poulsen PH 3½-2½ Floor Lamp Centenary Edition
Manufacturer: Louis Poulsen | Designer: Poul Henningsen
A Century of Considered Light
The PH 3½-2½ Floor Lamp Centenary Edition is the standing form of one of the twentieth century's most important lighting systems.
In 1926, Poul Henningsen introduced System PH — a geometrically precise approach to shade design that solved a problem no one had properly addressed before: how to produce artificial light that is bright enough to be useful, warm enough to be comfortable, and completely free of glare. One hundred years later, the principle remains unchanged.
The 3½-2½ is the floor lamp expression of that system. Three shades — a mouth-blown four-layered amber upper shade and two mouth-blown three-layered white opal lower shades, glossy outside and sandblasted matte within — work together to direct light with a precision that is immediately apparent when the lamp is switched on. The upward light is warm and ambient; the downward light is soft and shadow-free.
The Finish
The finish is aged brass, lacquered to preserve its patina permanently. Paired with a dark brown textile cord, the lamp occupies that rare position of feeling simultaneously archival and entirely at home in a contemporary interior. The ID number, engraved beneath the socket housing, marks each piece individually.
