Louis Poulsen PH 2/1 Stem Fitting Pendant Light

Three Shades, One Stem
Poul Henningsen developed his three-shade system in 1925–26, first realised in collaboration with Louis Poulsen for the Paris Exhibition that year. The lamp won gold. His approach was scientific: using the logarithmic spiral as a geometric basis, he achieved even distribution of light across the entire curve of each shade, eliminating glare and harsh shadow entirely. The PH 2/1 Stem Fitting takes that principle and scales it — three complete PH 2/1 shade sets suspended from a single chrome stem, creating a wide, low-hanging pendant suited to long tables, open-plan spaces, and rooms with generous ceiling height.
The model numbers refer to shade size. Each PH 2/1 unit uses an approximately 200mm top shade paired with lower shades from the 1/1 model — a ‘hybrid’ configuration that allows the pendant to hang at lower heights without losing the integrity of the system. In its current form, the Stem Fitting was introduced in 2003.
The Design
All shades are mouth-blown in three-layer white opal glass — glossy on the exterior, sandblasted matte on the underside — producing a soft, diffused light distribution with no visible hot spots. The body and suspension unit are in high lustre chrome plated brass and aluminium. The majority of light is directed downward, making it particularly effective over a dining table or kitchen island.
