A Sofa Built Around One Small Detail

The CH162 was designed in 1965 and remained in Wegner’s archives until 2013, when Carl Hansen & Søn discovered it while working through his photo and model records. It is a two-seater sofa with a geometric silhouette — raised sides, clean vertical and horizontal lines — and a construction that rewards closer attention.

The Cover Cap

The defining detail is the enlarged wooden cover cap set into each armrest. It conceals the screw that fixes the upholstery to the frame, but Wegner made it larger than strictly necessary, positioned it slightly back from the front edge of the leg, and oriented its grain transversally to the grain of the leg itself. A functional element turned into the sofa’s most recognisable feature.

The frame is solid wood, firmly upholstered. The cushions use down wrapped around a foam core — a construction that gives the geometric form a softness that the silhouette alone does not suggest. Available in Oak Soap, Oak Oil, Oak White Oil, or Walnut Oil, with a wide selection of Carl Hansen fabrics and leathers.
