Vitra Herringbone Pillow
Manufacturer: Vitra | Designer: Raw-Edges, 2019
The Herringbone Pillow began as a site-specific project. In 2018, Raw-Edges — the London-based studio of Shay Alkalay and Yael Mer — designed an entire floor of the VitraHaus on the Vitra Campus, developing a series of pillows with patterns derived from immersion dyeing. The technique involves dipping fabric into dye baths in stages, creating bands of overlapping colour intensity that shift depending on depth and duration. The results were precise enough to serve as direct templates for the printed pattern used in production.
The geometric clarity of the herringbone pattern belies its handcrafted origins — the intersecting bands of colour read as crisp and considered, with a freshness that works across both minimal and more layered interiors. The cotton shell is filled with duck half down for a soft, supportive feel.
