Vitra Eames La Chaise
Manufacturer: Vitra | Designer: Charles & Ray Eames, 1948
Sculpture You Can Sit In
La Chaise was designed by Charles and Ray Eames in 1948 for a competition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Its form was inspired by Floating Figure, a sculpture by Gaston Lachaise — and the connection is immediately legible. The shell billows and curves in a way that feels closer to sculpture than furniture, yet its undulating surface accommodates a surprising range of sitting and reclining positions, for one person or two.
The shell is moulded in polyester resin with a white lacquer finish, supported on five chrome-plated tubular steel rods anchored in a solid oak cruciform base. The oak is finished in a protective natural lacquer. La Chaise has become one of the defining objects of organic design — a piece that holds its own as much in a gallery as in a living room.
