Vitra Compas Direction Desk

Manufacturer: Vitra | Designer: Jean Prouvé, 1953

The Compass in Steel and Wood

Jean Prouvé developed several versions of the Compas table around 1950, basing the design on the structural principles for which he is known. Common to all of them are the slender, elegantly splayed legs — their form a direct reference to the hinged arms of a compass, le compas in French. The solid wood top gives the Compas Direction an individual touch that sets it apart from the more industrial pieces in the Prouvé canon.

With its compact dimensions, the desk is ideal for the contemporary, largely paperless home office — particularly in combination with the Vitra Fauteuil Direction or the Vitra Fauteuil Direction Pivotant.

Specifications

  • Dimensions — W125 Ă— D60 Ă— H73cm or W125 Ă— D70 Ă— H73cm
  • Top — solid oak, natural oiled; solid oak, dark hard-wax oil finish; or solid American walnut, natural oiled
  • Base — bent sheet steel, powder-coated (smooth finish)
  • Wood origin — oak (Quercus robur) from Western Europe and/or Poland; American walnut (Juglans nigra) from the USA

Part of the Vitra Jean Prouvé Collection, Vitra Home Office, Office Desks and Home Office collections.
