Louis Poulsen PH Snowball Pendant Light
Manufacturer: Louis Poulsen | Designer: Poul Henningsen
Designed Around Light
Poul Henningsen designed the PH Snowball in 1958, first exhibiting it alongside the PH 5 at the Danish Museum of Decorative Art. It passed largely unnoticed at the time — only entering production in 1983, when it was finally recognised as the considered, quietly radical object it had always been. Like all of Henningsen’s work, it was built around a single principle: light that is beautiful, glare-free, and precisely directed.
The Design
The Snowball emits soft, diffused light through a system of layered shades with matt-painted undersurfaces and glossy top surfaces. The contrast between the two creates an attractive internal reflection, producing uniform light distribution across the fixture. When illuminated, the upper portion glows while the lower section remains in shadow — a characteristic interplay of light and form that is unmistakably Henningsen.
In Your Home
The Snowball suits central and corner placements equally well, and is particularly striking installed in pairs above a long dining table. In a dining room it creates a warm, welcoming atmosphere for everyday meals and occasions alike. In a living room, positioned centrally, it casts soft light across the space and draws attention to surrounding furniture and décor. In an entryway, it makes an immediate statement — adding both elegance and ambient light from the moment you walk in.
