The Bedside Lamp
The PH 2/2 Luna has been known as a bedside lamp since it first appeared in the late 1930s — and the name has stuck for good reason. Poul Henningsen designed it to wind down with you: a lamp that produces genuinely comfortable light at close range, without glare, without harshness, and with enough warmth to shift the atmosphere of a room from day to evening. The “Luna” name is apt — it casts light the way moonlight does, softly and from all directions at once.
The lamp’s defining feature is its adjustability. The upper section tilts up to 45 degrees left or right by turning the shade holder and tightening the finger screw — making it equally effective as a reading lamp or a source of ambient light, depending on how it’s positioned.
The Design
Three mouth-blown opal glass shades — three-layered, glossy on the exterior and sandblasted matte within — produce a soft, diffused light that wraps around the lamp rather than projecting in a single direction. The aged brass top shade directs a warm downward light, while the glass shades below create a gentle all-round glow. The stem, base, socket housing, and switch are all in aged brass with fine hairlines, lacquered to preserve the finish over time.
Works equally well on a bedside table, a bookshelf, a desk, or a windowsill. The curved stem and compact footprint make it unobtrusive in almost any setting.
